THE PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS

THE PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS

THE PRESENT SIMPLE
THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS
1: Things which are always true:
E.g: Water boils at 100 degrees.
1: Things which are happening at the moment of speaking:
E.g: The water is boiling now, so you can put in the pasta.
2: Permanent situations (or nearly permanent; true for a few years at least):
E.g: Julie lives in London.
2: Temporary situations:
E.g: Julie is living in Paris for a few months (usually she lives in London).
3: Situations which are slowly changing:
E.g: I'm getting better and better at speaking English.
3: Habits or things we do regularly:
E.g: I drink coffee every morning.
4: Temporary or new habits:
E.g: I'm drinking too much coffee these days because I'm so busy at work.
5: Annoying habits (usually with 'always'):
E.g: My flatmate is always leaving the kitchen in a mess!
4: Future events which are part of a timetable:
E.g: My plane leaves at eight tonight.
5: To talk about the future after certain words ('when' 'until' 'after' 'before' 'as soon as'):
E.g: I'll call you when I get home.
6: Definite future plans:
E.g: I'm meeting John after class today.
6: To talk about what happens in books, plays and films:
E.g: At the end of the book, the detective catches the killer.
7: To talk about people in pictures and photos:
In this photo, my mother is walking beside a lake.
Remember:
We use the present simple with stative verbs. We can't use any continuous tense (including the present continuous tense, of course) with stative verbs.
